Coaching and Mentoring are guided processes for developing people.
There is a huge amount of literature available freely in the public domain to understand these concepts.
We deal very briefly with these concepts here - enough to stimulate interest and to gain a sense of what essentially they look like.
What is Coaching?
Coaching is a guided process whereby a coach, through active listening and questioning, helps a coachee achieve a specific personal or professional goal .
A coach does not provide solutions but uses the coachee’s potential to find solutions through the process of enquiry. Coaching involves the belief that the individual has the answers to their own situations within them. The coach is not a subject matter expert, but rather is focused on helping the individual to unlock their own potential.
In large measure, coaching success is attributed to challenging limiting beliefs, thinking and assumptions of the coachee. It is based on asking rather than telling, on provoking thought rather than giving directions. The coach helps to clarify goals, milestones or measures of success and holds the coachee accountable for them. Generally speaking coaching improves personal growth & effectiveness exponentially.
What do good coaches do? They ..
- display a very high degree of listening
- engage with the coachee in positive enquiry
- clarify contexts with respect to the coachees's situation
- help them craft personal journeys
- provide useful perspectives that impact the coachee's defined goals
Coaching provides contextually responsive and flexibly scheduled support for individuals and teams. We offer a range of coaching and development options delivered by our team of expert coaches.
What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a process by which a mentee learns largely from the experiences of mentors. For mentoring to be effective, the mentor has to listen carefully to the mentees, understand their situations and probably dig much deeper into them, share ideas, tell stories, show direction, guide or navigate mentees and offer a lot of encouragement.
It is not necessary that mentors are subject matter experts in the exact area required by the mentee. However, mentors needs to be resourceful to leverage their network and provide the mentee with access to people, resources and methods that enhance the mentee's capabilities.
What do good mentors do? They ..
- share experiences with mentees to help them understand how to deal with different situations
- brainstorm with mentees on possible solutions
- facilitate mentees in navigating the organization landscape
- help them craft transition journeys
- offer mentees opportunities to leverage their network for different situations and learning a variety of skills
